VMware ESXi: Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer (Windows XP)
Posted on October 23rd, 2008 16 commentsIf you get this error when installing Windows XP in VMware ESXi, simply do the following:
- Download this floppy image which contains the VMware SCSI drivers: vmscsi-1.2.0.4.flp.
- Upload the floppy image to the datastore using the VI Client.
- Edit the virtual machine settings and select Floppy Drive 1, then choose the option on the right to “Use existing floppy image in datastore:” and select the floppy image.
- Power on the virtual machine.
- Press F6 when you see the message “Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver…” at the bottom of the screen.
- Connect Floppy Drive 1.
- Press S, then press Enter to select the VMware SCSI Controller driver, then press Enter again to continue with the setup.
That’s it! The Windows XP setup should now be able to detect the hard drives :).

Would have been great, but getting
File \vmscsi.sys could not be loaded.
The error code is 22Setup cannot continue. Press any key to exit.
Granted I tried this with VMWare workstation though, not ESXi.

dont forget to disconnect the floppy drive before you reboot, or else it will try to boot off of it!

Thanks .. Also, Please note that the SCSI should be BUS and not LSI. Otherwise it will not work.

I swear I’ve done this successfully in the past, using the floppy image for storage drivers and RIS.
However, in trying to create a new VM I’m getting to the setup where it loads Windows XP Professional Setup, but I never get a opportunity to press F6 and utilize the drivers on the floppy image. I can’t tell if it is just blinking through that screen without giving me a chance to input, or it never comes up, but it dies on the “Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer…” message. Only option is to press F3. -

Hey Gerry,
Maybe it went away very quickly, have you tried just keep pressing F6 during setup?

Hi
Thank you very much.
Remember to use BUS and not LSI.
Then it worked like a charm…
